At the 2013 Joint Religious Legislative Coalition’s (JRLC) Day on the Hill, keynote speaker Dr. Sayyid M. Syeed from the Islamic Society of North America looked upon over 800 attendees from across the state and challenged us to stand “shoulder to shoulder” with people of different faiths and fight for those facing hardship all over the world. He advised “rolling up our sleeves” and continuing to strengthen the JRLC coalition as we advocate for socially just legislation.
The program for the day included listening and learning from others of diverse faiths and supporting each other in action to promote justice. JRLC staff briefed the group on issues coming up in the legislature this year that require support, such as the Family Economic Security Act, Safe Harbor – No Wrong Door Bill, and Homes for All legislation. Together, as people of faith, the coalition spoke out in unity to Minnesota legislators to prevent state policies from drifting away from justice for those who are falling behind.
JRLC is the largest and most inclusive interfaith public interest group in Minnesota and is authorized and governed by four Sponsoring Members: the Minnesota Catholic Conference, the Minnesota Council of Churches, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, and the Islamic Center of Minnesota.
